Caring for your garden this spring

Spring garden careThese are very worrying and uncertain times. The necessity of distancing ourselves from other people can be difficult for us both physically and mentally. However, one of the things we can do while spending more time at home and self-isolating from others, is spend time in the garden.  It can lift our spirits and provide a means for us to exercise and enjoy fresh air whilst abiding by social distancing guidelines.

Welcome signs of spring are evident all around us. Birds in the garden are busy nest building and getting ready to raise chicks. Shrubs and plants are quickly bursting into growth and if you can get outside there’s plenty to do, but the one most important thing you can do to help your garden at this time of year is to replace nutrients that have been washed away during the wet winter. It’s time to feed your garden.

The springtime production of leaves is very nutrient demanding for plants, shrubs and trees and at the same time as leaves burst into life there is also growth in the roots. Growth, and therefore the abundance of fruit and flowers they produce, are enhanced and maximised if you apply a general purpose fertiliser which will deliver nutrients like Calcium and Magnesium, among others, directly to your plants and set them up for the rest of the season.

As well as adding plant food in the form of fertilisers, it’s a good idea to also condition the soil from which your plants draw their nutrients by adding organic matter, such as leaf mould or garden compost. Not only will this boost the nutrient content of the soil, but it will improve its structure and help it to retain moisture. Using composts as soil conditioners or mulch helps make the plant nutrients already present in the soil more available to plant roots.

Henry Street is obviously now closed to visitors to the store, but to help our customers continue with the care of their gardens during this era of Coronavirus we have established a temporary online store, https://henrystreet.store/, allowing you to purchase essentials such as compost, fertiliser, new plants and wild bird food without leaving your home. We offer free delivery to all local postcodes and will work tirelessly in the coming weeks to update this store with an extensive range of stock. It will open on Thursday 26th March. Please email info@henrystreet.co.uk if you want anything specific, or if you need advice on which products are best for your particular garden or plants. Our experts will help you pick the perfect product for your needs.
